Another "away on vacation" threads and came home to this....why?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
simply check that tanks against another tanks.. if your getting 0s across the board ide say its likely your test is bad ect. as for getting 0s i get straight zeros on my planted tank regularly.. but i also have TDS issues with the tank and recently lost fish to this i believe( reason you should still do water changes regularly on them) idk if you have a TDS meter but ide check it if you can. what are your kh/gh on the tank? may have had a PH swing.. would also give you incorrect readings.

much as i hate to say it but did your son have friends over while you where gone? kids do stupid things sometimes, not always knowingly. as for the SB dieing from what i understand of them like other human bred fish.. geneticly it was probably a delicate fish. more delicate then your others.

I just had a new background installed from design by nature. I didnt install it properly and there was some food back there. Did another water change. Parameters still great. Wait it out. As for the chances of a party with my son...definitely an option!!!!! Ph went low also.

If I'm gone a week or 10 days, I let the fish starve. The only time I've ever had a multiple death situation, is when I had a kid feed.
Not that that was it. Maybe one of the fish died of natural causes, and this could easily cloud that tank, drop the pH, and cause something else to die.
Balzani are best kept in a harem, of 1 male, 3 or more females. And with the female gone, the male mayhave taken it out on the Texas, although, Texans are normally very tough.
I never have ammonia or nitrite in normal situations, and my nitrate is usually 2-5ppm, but I also use planted sumps and protein skimmers. I believe the fractionation takes out nitrate precursors.
One other thing, I find Gymnogeophagus kept at constant tropical temps, tend to succumb to disease, and or, die early.
Although they can take high temps into the 90s, not for any length of time, mine seem much better with diurnal temp swings of 5-10' up during the day, down at night, and seasonal dips into the 50s and 60s'F.
I never use heaters at all with the Gymnos.

Ive lowered the temp significantly slowly so as to not shock anyone. It worked very well. I am working on a seperate tank to puul off a cold period for them. Thanks for the info. My male gymno is very nasty toward the females. I am pretty sure he killed th eone female. The other female is now in hiding and has darkened up and he has brightened up. He has a weird disposition, cant quite figure him out.

X2 on the starving idea. I know its horrible and I should be glad that people are willing to take care of my tanks but I don't think I've ever gone on vacation without losing a fish. I'm starting to not like vacations. No matter how much I tell people to feed, even with "sample servings" in front of the tanks, they always overfeed and I come home to nasty tanks and spend the next few days after I get back doing massive water changes all around.

I have had the same problem with others not following the instructions that I have left for them.I have had to do massive water changes upon my return due to the large amounts of uneaten food in the tanks.

Balzanii are really peaceful but I wouldn't underestimate them. Mine hung out with a FH I was growing out and suprisingly the geo could hold his own.
