I've read most of the threads on convicts and other online facts, because i wanted to try breeding them for feeder fish. I would really appreciate comments from other on how to make thing more successful and tell me if I'm doing things wrong. See i have a baby alligator that loves to eat approximately 15in, the little guy eats about 5 med.- lrg. gold fish a day. So i went out and bought 20 convicts to pair off and breed and feed him the ones who haven't paired off. I took about 6 of the smaller ones out and feed them to the gator. I've had these fish for four days not and I've found 2 groups of eggs. Should I take out the others or should i leave them be and wait till the fry are free swimmers and put in another tank? I don't really know which ones paired off they all look a like to me, and they are hard to catch because the just go in their pots. If pics will help you help me let me know ill try to take some and post. thank you.

say what ? you have a baby alligator ? is that even legal ? much less is it even feasible to house a full grown one in captivity ?

i hope you have a very large tank for him or a very large tank on the way

what are you going to keep that thing in?

you know that they grow up to about 16" per year for the first 7 years (depending on temp and quality and amount of food)

As to your questions about convicts, i would separate both pairs of parents into separate tanks, they are generally good parents. the young can be left with the parents as long as you provide sufficient food and water quality. just try and remove most all of the new fry by the time they get about 1/2" - 3/4" they will start to devour the newly hatched fry at that point (if not before)

in my experience they convict fry have more to fear from their older siblings than from the adult parents.

Yes i do have a baby alligator and I'm well aware of how big they get he is in a 55g tank now i will soon build a nice enclosure as he grows to big for his tank. alligators are legal in some states. When he gets to big to house or feed I will be faced a very hard decision, ether donate him to a zoo or farm or cut him up and make some thing from the hide and eat the meat. But this thread is on fish not my little baby. I mite post a thread about my little guy later when i update his enclosure. More comments on the fish are greatly appreciated.

For me, the more I tried to get them to breed, the more they didn't do anything. Once I basically put it on hold, they began spawning left and right lol. My first batch was a dud though and they either got eaten by the parents (due to deformities, whatnot) or eaten by my juvi JD (stupid of me to put it in the 40 with them).
I raised the temperature ever so slightly about +2...sorry forgot exact temp lol.
Good luck
