Another cycle thread, help!

Today’s test, 23 hours later. After last night’s test dosed ammonia up to about 3ppm.

Ammonia: .24
Nitrite: 1.0
Nitrate: 10-25

Ammonia is being consumed much faster now, things have picked up quickly in the last week.

Tonight:

Ammonia: 0ish, maybe very slight reading
Nitrite: 2-5

Strange new bacterial bloom, cloudy water and white powder coating everything.

Dosed ammonia back up, seems to need multiple smaller dosings throughout the day but I’m working too much this week to do that.

Hopefully nitrites start going down soon. I won’t have time to do a water change until Thursday night and I’m hoping nitrites don’t get too toxic until then.

What a painful thread.

Reach out to someone in the Greater Sacramento Aquarium Society (or someone who has a mature tank) and get some used media or sponge filter. Your tank will be "cycled" instantly.

10 days ago I did get some seeded media from a friend. Did not cycle instantly however it seemed to help speed up the process. Sorry it’s been a painful read for you. Feel free to ignore maybe?

It’s been 5 or 6 weeks since I’ve started cycling. I don’t think that’s unheard of given the water volume. But I am ready to be done. A little concerned about the newest bacterial bloom however.

Hello; I have been following the thread. How do you feel about snails? I throw some into a new setup first thing. They cane do some good things. The more common MTS, Ramshorn and pond snails can reproduce in a tank and some do not like them. I have the MTS and Ramshorn in my tanks.
There are some brackish snails that can live in fresh water but cannot reproduce in fresh. Called niterite (sp) I think. I have had a few of those.
they do at least two things. One is to eat organic stuff so it does not just rot
Another is they metabolize to the best of my knowledge much like fish. This should mean they make some ammonia. I also find most snails to be very hardy.

I hadn’t considered adding snails at this point, thank you for the suggestion I’ll pick up some nerites. I’m not too worried about the aesthetics and unsightly bacteria film just yet, as long as it’s not causing any problems. I’m running the 15lpm air pump so oxygenation shouldn’t be an issue. Ph seems to also be constant around 7.5 so I don’t know if there are any unaccounted factors related to slowing my cycle and causing the bacterial bloom.

Hello; With the nerites you can also add some fish food. My take being the snails are sort of like having some fish in the sense of helping to establish some bb.
