Did you clean the HOB out before using it? Did you experience any power outtage which cause the filter to stop for more than 30mins? The bio bacteria would die if the filter stop running for over 30mins. With HOB typical it would take minimum 1-4 weeks for the bio bacteria to build up. Add Kordon slimecoat, waterchange, and reduce feeding. This is your best solution for now.

crap......yea, I unplugged the filter to do a water change last week and forgot to plug it back in till the next evening So do I just play the waiting game now until the cycle gets back on track?

Ya, you'll have to wait till the cycling kick in again. Put a few small expendible fish in the tank so the tank will cycle faster.
