JD Man made this when he was bored. I put it to use. this thing works great. In the pix the mechanical filter section is overflowing because I stuffed it with floss to get rid of the lava rock dust (I didn't bother cleaning the lava rock...at one point the tank was red). Anyway, I still have some cleaning to do to get it ready, but I think it's going well for using mostly stuff that I had laying around.

Thats awesome man. You and Bret are the DIY masters. There are very few things I do myself well.

I have a ton of those lava rocks in my old dead garden. Do you think I could boil them for 20minutes or so, then use them in my new sump? So crazy you posted this today, I just discovered the rocks, and was going to ask if they would work.

You could filter the great lakes with all those wet/drys. LOL

Thanks guys

They're so cheap it's not worth the risk IMO.

Looks good but I thought there was a problem with lava rock breaking down and affecting water chemistry.

I have another thank that has had lava rock for about 3 years. It's been fine.

Thanks. I must have been given some bad info.

What people do in reef tanks is give an acid bath:

1 gallon muriatic acid (get it at HD, ace for 4-6 bucks)
10 gallons water

soak for 10 minutes

rinse with fresh water

let it dry out
________________

You're basically killing any of the creatures on/in the rock and dissolving them in acid. Seems to work though!
