Another DIY Wet/Dry

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow! It looks like it's working as planned. I might have to do some mods to my existing w/d to make it work like this one.

JD Man made this when he was bored. I put it to use. this thing works great. In the pix the mechanical filter section is overflowing because I stuffed it with floss to get rid of the lava rock dust (I didn't bother cleaning the lava rock...at one point the tank was red). Anyway, I still have some cleaning to do to get it ready, but I think it's going well for using mostly stuff that I had laying around.

What size pipe are you running on the intake and your approx GPH?

Also who made the overflow box any more detail pics of this section would be appreciated ?

Looks good but I thought there was a problem with lava rock breaking down and affecting water chemistry.

I doubt it. I understand igneous rock to be inert.

it's a quiet one 4000 and I'm not sure of the actual GPH. The overflow box is a CPR style capable of 1600gph. It's connected to the sump with a 1.5" pipe. I'll try to get some new pix tomorrow. The overflow is really simple. The tiny standpipe I put in the overflow is awesome though. It makes it almost silent.

looks great....

I went back and searched. A magazine article in TFH stated that lava rock could raise ph and effect the buffering capacity of your water. That's why I asked.

I saw this filter over the weekend, but never heard it. It's amazing how quiet it runs.
