But I would like to suggest you consider a Pressurized Pond Filter. I've used the BioForce 2000 for indoor aquariums for several years and was extremely pleased with the result. You'll have to design and put together your own plumbing, but I was able to get almost twice the media capacity and over twice the flow rate that the FX5 boasts... for the same price as the FX5...

whats the noise like on the bioforce?

just some food for thought, all filters are over rated for the size tank they can handle, but in my expierence eheim is worse at it then fluval is(but ehiems are longer lasting).

I would go with the FX5 and just load it up with scrubbies and sponges.

I wouldn't know. The only part that ever broke in the 2+ decades that I've been running Eheims was a ceramic axle - I stepped on it. My oldest Eheim is from the Classic Line (back then their only line), and it's been running for the past 19 years - non-stop.

Don't know which one is easier to clean.

I know some one is going to disagree but it depends on the stock and how much waste. The media needs to be cleaned when your water levels start to spike even with routien water changes. Could be 6 month- 1 year depending on stock.

I have 2 2180's one on my 180g and one on my 125. they are super easy to clean. I have 14 adult fronts in the 180 and 10 in the 125 and I clean them once a year.

I have two 2217 on my 75 gallon tank. I have used all the classic lines and on all my tanks and they work perfect for me. I bought a fx5 for my 90 gallon...broke in a week. Hassle to get them to replace it. Took me 6 months to get it replaced. Finally replaced one worked for about 3 months then died again. Right now its sitting in the garage collecting dust.

Perhaps a little late to the game here, but I would absolutely consider the Marineland C530. I feel it improves on some of the complaints for the FX5. Such as too much bypas, small media baskets, noise of pump etc. The C530 does extremely well on tall these fronts.
