so i was reading the fx5 stainer thread i was think why would you want to change it it seems to work great....
but then i went to bed
when i woke up today i took a look at my tank and i first noticed the strainer had come loose and was sitting at the bottom of the tank i figured someone must of rammed into it it

but then i felt horrible as i found my firemouth stuck in the strainer tail first dead!!!!!!!

there was nothing i could do i guess 600 gph was too much for him

now i poed at the fx5

i just wanted to share

heres a pix of my frozen firemouth next to a dollar for size refference
the white stuff is frozen water
rip little buddy
he was about 1.5 years old

That sucks. That is one of the larger firemouths I have seen :(

Sorry for your loss :(

Umm, Its VERY VERY hard for the intake to come off with fish. Were you using the suction cups supplied with the strainer? Because I have a hard time removing the strainer from the glass and from the pipe. No way a fish would be able to do this if it had been properly mounted.

Not really... Mine gets knocked off all the time... The bottom half just clips on, the suction cups are on the top half... IF this is what actually happened..

Try getting some fishing line or something and tie the 2 pieces together. Sorry about your firemouth, he was a brute. I'm actually looking for a strainer to replace mine as well.

it was on there good
the suction cups where mounted as well

i do have some pretty big fish ranging from 10- 15'' in the tank so they can get alot of force behind them

im not blaming the fx5 or myself for this, i guess it just happens
i set this up over 6 months ago so i guess over time it loosened up a bit

from now on part of my maintance will be to check the tightness of the strainer, this should fix any issues

it always suck when loosing a fish espacialy when you have then since there conception..
this fm was a beast big fat and full of color.... its a shame
especially for his other half who is colorless and looking stressed on her own.
hopefully she will cheer up or i have to make some arrangements to rehome her or replaced the other

Ah, yikes. I didn't know you had fish that big. Ok, maybe its possible now.

I forgot about that bottom half. That is really easy to knock loose
