If you want clear water you could use clearmax instead of polishing pads as I used them previously and they have caused problems

I had 2 left over sponges the go in the outside ring of the baskets. I cut them to fit in the middle so I have pre-filter on the top, followed by the sponge and bio rings on the bottom.

When these things clog it puts out microbubbles which I hate.

I've toyed around with different setups as far as what's inside and in the end I just ditched all sponges and filled it to the top with pond matrix.

I run my FX5 with the blue "fine filter" round pads. They don't clog as fast as polishing pads but they catch a lot of gunk. I bought a 21 pack for $20 to the door off of Amazon. I just toss in a new one with each cleaning.

Ahhh I should have put the blue pads under the ones I made from the sponges... Now I will have to pull the filters back out...

I run the blue pads in the top and bottom tray, I keep ceramic rings in the middle tray.
