Another Gar heartache experience.

Good and bad news.

The little longnose gar is still eating like crazy and growing bigger everyday. The body shape is still contourted, but all else seems normal. It is now in the 55 growout and eating floating pellets agressively and taking fish fillet meat, cut into 3" X .125" - .25" roughly minnow shape, via hand feeding daily.

It seems to be less finicky on species type(s) then my other gars. They all love Tilapia, Flounder, Trout, Bass & perch to a lesser extent. The large > 20" LNG and my Floridas are reluctant to eat Whiting, Butterfish, Mullet, Sopt, Croaker and Pollack!

The bad news is that my largest Florida gar might have broken it's back. It is not doing well at all. It has been close to a week and it has not eaten, mostly lays on the bottom and is visually distressed attempting to swim. It is around a foot long and extremely thick and was in a 90G growout tank with another Florida gar an inch or two shorter but also extremely thick.

The tank is not cluttered, 2' wide with plenty of swimming room, far less current and the only semi-aggressive non-gar tankmate being a Red Bay Snook also around a foot long. The Bay Snook NEVER eaven gives meat chunks a consideration and there is absolutely no crossover in the types of food they eat causing competition.

I will post a picture later this evening, as I am not sure that it is a "broken back"! It's body is not at a wierd angle like the baby LNG's was, and the belly is still rounded outward, but there is a decent sized "hump" on it's back now.

It could possibly be some kind of toomer?

definately seems to be a broken back leeman, really sorry to hear about this one yet again. from the descrption, i would personally put it down, as crappy as that may be, it's sometimes best for the fish. good luck with it.
