not necessarily a decade, but easily several years at least (in captivity). i have one now that is around 18" and i've had it for going on 3 years, with the fish being around 4 years old.

it's difficult to say, when there seem to be so few current records of captive gars kept in home aquaria for extended periods of time (i.e. over a decade). perhaps that will not be the case in the future, given that us current gar keepers are responsible and able to keep good info/records :) --

lol! i agree. i was being sarcastic w/ the decade comment. i have a two year old that is pushing 18" now.
