Another goonch ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this is probably going to turn into a grow out thread so here is the current housing

its a 39"x 27"x12" tank so over 6ft squared of floor space, with a 1200 lph internal with 4 baskets or mature media which gives a 100% surface movement on the tank. currently water depth is 10". i have put a couple of slate tiles down and some slate caves, rocks and some drift wood with some java ferns tied. this was all mature from another tank. apart from that no other substrate as i wanted to keep it clinical for the first couple of weeks. may add sand and a bit of gravel later. temps are at 24'c and i have a couple of young spider plants in the back.

he is settled in one of the caves and seems happy but not feed yet.

any tips welcome.

Nice mate tanks looking great he should be happy in there good will come with time , I've never owned a goonch but plenty of cats once settled in it'll eat , try earthworm they can resist an earthworm when on hunger strike ;)

Hope you find a decent house mate with the space your after (man cave ) , ive just bought my house but we were renting it for eight years previously so no moving involved which is nice when you've got big tanks lol

cheers mate, i'll be grabbing my monthly quota of worms from the LFS tomorrow.

yeh the house we are in is tiny, but a massive garden hahaha but not a chance of buying this place. good thing is houses are at a good price round here so plenty to choose from so being picky hahaha, and this beast has only changed things slightly as i planed on having another big koi pond, so the plan will be to change things slightly and the pond will be built then a shed around it (not quite that simple but you get the idea). only major difference is the goonch needs more surface space rather than volume.

this was a koi breeding tank i built out of decking (not the best but it worked hahaha) it was 8'x4'x4' so half the depth, high flow and stronger build would be good for a 2-3' goonch maybe a bit deeper but then build a 10'x 8' shed around it, easy

i did an indoor pond before in a greenhouse for rearing fry from this breeding tank and it was great, the water was warm and the fry grow, issue was keeping it oxygenated well

the commets and Goldfish liked it though

cant wait to get back to pond building hahaha

Nice setup mate :)
House prices near me are stupid so my dream of a fish room/mancave are a few years off yet , I am extending on this two bed terrace though third bed in loft with proper staircase and kitchen extention so hopefully we can cash in a few years and get some space ,garage or cellar would be nice lol

Down here houses are ok price range 3-4 bed with garage around 80-100k if your not fussy about areas to much which I'm not. but I need a garage for my other hobbies hahaha so will have to make sure I have garden space for a single tank fish room.

Mate houses in south Manchester are ridiculous I just bought my two bed terrace for 120k that was a bargain 10k less than previous owner paid in 05 , they sell for 145k on my Rd and are selling for 199k on the next Rd because there slightly bigger with a bay window at front.
Like I said ridiculous prices , I'm building up on mine so I'm defo looking around 200k in few years as it'll be a proper three bed.
Plan is to either keep it rent it out and buy again or sell up cash in and move to a three bed semi with a garden/garage etc

long term game plan is where it's at mate. sound like you got a good bargain mate and prices are set to climb so will only go up in price.

talking of long term game plan.

so tank wise i'm only going to keep the goonch in a glass tank till it hits 1.5-2ft, but that will depend on situation. but the plan is to build a 8'x8'x3' pond, that about 1200G or 4600ltrs. i'll either run a 18000LPH pond pump ( around 16000 at 1m ). not worked out the main filter but a gravel drop return (not sure this is the correct name but basically the water flows over gravel to increase oxygen levels)

just need to work out if im going to build a vortex or gravity filter hahaha.
