If you want to fix this so it doesn't become a recurring nightmare the methodology is 50% water change, install good aeration and blackout the tank for a week or so, (I do about 5 days), then do another big water change after and you should be good to go.

The cheapie UV sterilizer that petco carries ($30) is actually pretty good for preventing algae outbreaks like this, but, the best method is to monitor your water params closely. As another poster said above, nutrient imbalance causes green algae, typically phosphates or nitrates.
