Another "Gulper Eats..." Thread

I know this is a really really dumb question but I wonder if you could hybrinize a Gulper Cat like a TSNXRTC-Imagine if somehow there was a way to get these fish to two feet-Crazy!

i don't believe you can, unfortunately (or fortunately?). Too distantly related

So when it poops, it must be huge right? Do they pass their meals all at once.
Actually, it's not big at all. I never even see anything substantial in the gravel, but then again, maybe I'm used to cleaning out lungfish poop...which is HUGE....and quite disgusting. :D

So is there anyfish closely realted to a gulper that you could breed it with if someone wanted it to be larger?

I think there would be several issues you would run into here. First is that these cats have never had any records of hybridization. Most catfish hybrids are man-made, where eggs are taken from the female and fertilized using a male of different species.

Second, there are no close relatives in the Asterophysus genus. Actually, batrachus is the only species I know of all together.

There are other relatives in the Auchenipteridae family, but again, natural hybridization has yet to occur with gulpers...as far as I know anyway. ;)

Third, I don't think there have been reports of captive breeding with this species either...so yet another hurdle to over come.

If you do find any documentation for hybridization, please make sure to post it because I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in that. A moster gulper at would be quite the sight.

Kenyan-thanks for the info-sometimes my wife says I think about dumb stuff too much! So thanks for your patience on the subject-sorry if I hijacked this thread!

LOL...no worries. Well, you figure if hybrids like RTCxTSN, RTCxL. longibarbis, etc. are man-made hybrids then someone had some crazy thoughts to come up with that..:D

I'm sure forced hybridization with another genus in Auchenipteridae couldn't be ruled out, and that would result is some ridiculously freaky-cool catfish. :naughty:
