What separates us from them? Fundamental reasons such as the purpose of collecting herp specimens. To herpers, they are in general, mainly for being part of a hobby. Scientists pick specimens up to carry out research or observations in a controlled environment.

he's carrying out observations and research in a controlled environment

Possible candidate for animal planets new series; Fatal Attractions.

No, this guy admits the snake wants to kill him. Those idiots think their snakes are in love with them or something..."Oh, Fluffy would never bite me. He loves me so much he - " And then Fluffy bites the nutjob.

And by the way, to all the people claiming that he's doing this in a controlled environment - YouTube is not a controlled environment. While the scientist might be secure in his own experience, what happens when some moron who wants to impress his friends sees this video, then goes out and buys a cobra cause he thinks he'll be able to train it to jump through hoops or something, then gets his ass bit and dies - those are new laws and restrictions put on everyone, not just the idiot that got bit.

I agree, he was pretty stupid putting it on youtube but the study its self is fairly controlled
sure he could go through some more safety features but he is still dealing with a smart and very dangerous animal

That is exactly my opinion. And my fear.

so what, he should restrict his freedom of speach?

LP, let's say someone posts a video on youtube of them training their five foot caiman. Someone views this video and thinks "Sweet, a croc you can train to sit and stay! That'll be much more badass than my neighbor's pitbull!" So they go out and buy a caiman themself. At some point (more likely sooner than later in this scenario) they make a mistake and end up seriously injured or worse, and it is this case that allows some politician to ban the ownership of crocodilians in, say, Pennsylvania.

Nobody's saying that this guy doesn't have the right to post this video on youtube. What we're discussing however is the responsibility he has to the viewers and others in his hobby - yes, even unfortunately the idiots who would then go out and buy a "pet" cobra.

A controlled environment is his own research lab. Youtube is another separate form of environment altogether. In that case, youtube is a chaotic place. Firstly, stop saying the guy is an idiot. He is clearly not an idiot, over zealous and enthusiastic, perhaps. I have to agree that without any conclusive findings, a reckless online video community is a bad place to post anything. Lp, it's not about freedom of speech, its about being responsible for your actions that are bound to affect the real idiots on youtube.

I am in no way referring to the man depicted in the original video as an idiot. Clearly he is well versed and trained in his work - he is a highly skilled individual who understands the risk and reward of the work that he is doing. The individuals that I call idiots are those who will view this and other videos like it, and think to themselves "...I can do that. Plus it'd be ****ing awesome to pull out at a kegger!" Those are the ones who pose an enormous risk to our hobby.
