Put a little grease down in the impeller shaft. It quiets things right down.

GREASE!I wouldn't do that.Unless I was sure my tank water won't come in contact with it.

Change the the metal pin the impeller spins on.

Funny you should bring this up.
Both of mine did the same thing after gulping some sand.
For the price of a motor and impeller, I just bought 2 more Emp. 400's to match the existing 2.
The Emps. seem to tolerate the sand better.
Plus, now with 4 along the back, everything is even.
