another mislabled gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my lfs just got some of these in too, very nice looking fish, should become a monster in no time.

No question about it thats a L. osseus..
Nice pick up. As E_americanus said they grow really big really fast. Good thing is you got the thing small so you should be able to get it over to prepared / frozen foods a bit easier. Also as mentioned be careful about not startling this fish too quickly. Longnoses (like shortnosed) are notorious for killing themselves by smacking into the glass when startled.

He has acclimated to his new home very well and has all ready eaten several feeder guppies for me. He was looking a little thin so I wanted to get some source of food in him. I am going to start offering prepared while he is finishing up the rest of the guppies I put in. Hopefully he'll start taking prepared soon. He doesn't seem too easily frightened yet. Thanks for the help and I will keep updates as he grows.

Richard,
How long do you think this gar could live comfortably in the 180 before I would need to upgrade to a bigger tank or rehome him?

Nice fish! Definately a long nose. I had the same exact fish, but my ornate bichir ate him. = (

It doesn't seem very easily frightened as you say. Mines was pretty laid back. It only swims when hungry. Right when it's full, it just kinda floats like a log.

kool looking gar i just got a 4 inch florida gar a month ago
