another monster tank project

its a commercial project you do need to seek professional help. Asking for advice at a fish enthusiasts forum is a recipe for disaster.

remember a lot of the fish enthusiasts from this forum are professionals...

tank idea looks nice but it will be a hard one to make perfect... can't belive it's me saying this, but you'd probably be better out with some koi's... hardyer and you are also suppose to look at them from above... rays are way to nice and gentle for any public place i think ;)

i agree with every1 totally. i have had a numerous number of people look at this thing and start scratching their heads. the first sign to me of confusion. the customer does have a high expectation of this project. at the moment with the pool pumps ect its staying pretty clean and it looks pretty cool. i need to get some new pics for you guys to see. those dont do it much justice. there is a koi pond about 50 ft away from this. the origional plan was to pump out of it but in the winter monthes there wouldnt be any way to keep it heated. back to the drawing board. probably just leave it like it is for the meantime

Have you thought about installing a counter-flow degassing column? Strips carbon dioxide and replaces it with oxygen. Since sizing columns for gas transfer is rather complex, you can contact technical specialists at Aquatic Eco-Systems, Inc. to use their computer programs to help you out. Tech Support: 407-886-3939. www.aquaticeco.com While you're at it, they can design your whole filtration system and save you the headaches.

You could ask for advice from a public aquarium. I'm sure there are also some marine biology college grad students that might be interested in helping you just for the experience. Ask around the college's, you might find more help from the students than you might have otherwise thought!

personally i would PM Zoodiver and Oddball, i did when i had Q's about a smaller shark pond and they set me straight. also try to find other examples of this on the web and in other forums, magazines, etc and see if you can get in contact with some of them.

not sure if anyone said this. but if you run air bubbles in the tank you can always pitch the angle of the celine so bubbles run up and out.either that. just run it on one side of the thing with an escape on the top where the bubbles would go. (just an idea).

you can also use the return of the pump and insert a smaller pipe/ tube into it and out and above the water line. that way the flow of water will natrually bring air into the return line. think jacuzzi.

angling the surface is a big head ache and the powerhead thing your talking about is a venturi... pulling in air and breaking it up both methods require visible air bubbles which i prefer to keep out of a tank (bubble eye disease)

why not have a bio tower on the side to double as an airation system. so you have a large acrylic tower filled with biomedia (wet/dry) and the cascading water will help with gas exchange and replacement. and you can disguise the tower as you like. then you pump the return ontot the opposite end from where the water is being drawn in

Yes, this is similar to the degassing column I suggested. The column is more complex, with blowers and such, but in this situation should many times more efficient.
