Another new catfish pickup.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two in my 450 and they live side by side in their own caves, after the big one layed his two big whiskers on the little one they get along fine by basically never interacting even though they are literally one or two inches away from each other. Mine never cruise the tank but are easy to look at in their condo. One of my favorite cats in the hobby for sure.

While observing them last night, the smaller one seems to shadow the big one but at a distance. Both cruise the tank. I'm really liking these cats. I'll wait and see if any major fights occur. If it does then I might have to get 1 more so won't get bullied all the time.

They are quirky, that's for sure, and, thus, fun to observe.

Mine 5 are about 10", 5-7 years old, three standard-looking blochii, one with crisp dots as opposed to the common muddled pattern, and one, the smallest, with clear 4-lines, I think this one would be most correctly called a 4-line Pim, Pimelodus tetramerus, which indeed maxes out at smaller size versus blochii.

The one with the crisp dotting was sold to me on aquabid as Pimelodus maculatus, which it is not, of course, because it has the black mark by the dorsal front base, the signature of the blochii type Pimelodus.

They school together ~75% of the time. Their interaction with tank mates is fun too due to their inquisitive, spunky, highly energetic nature. They are really fast, can be crabby but most usually just curious and explorative.

When they are healthy and hungry and stress-free, they feed in a wild frenzy, sometimes irritating their tank mates to no end, as happened with my e-cat who would zap only them out of 50 others.

Welcome to MFK!

Interesting-looking Pimelodus, not blochii (no black mark by the dorsal). It's a large genus with lots of look-alikes and variability with species. I've never seen this kind. May be the rare maculatus http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/image.php?image_id=19460

But Fishnatics is right - please create your own thread. It's a good practice and these catfish are worth it too.
