Definitely not altifrons...... They are anywhere from 4" to about 8" (there is a group of them).

They look just like the fish that were being labeled as loisellei/carpintis hybrids at the same store. Conkel was selling them that hybrid at one time (openly as a hybrid). I don't know what the %&$* is up. Someone isn't being truthful. I mean, you just don't accidentally create a back story on a new species!

This is the same place that was selling this similar "new species" recently (and for years before):

Someone is being cute for the purpose of making money and throwing out a "NEW SPECIES" name whenever they feel like it. The question is, is the LFS doing it or is the supplier?

I know some people are going to try to read in to this, but I really don't care. IT IS WHAT IT IS. The owner was not in today, or I'd have asked him WTF?

lol...fun times in naivety land @ $130 a pair, huh? I wonder if its just you that sees all this, or if its happening at other places.

I don't know about OTHER places, but it surely happens at this place a lot!

No matter. I doubt there's much of a market for dull looking $130 fish in a LFS.

The DCT list has been listing the loisellei x Chairel carpintis hybrid for some time. It is clearly labled as such on the list and currently available. They are currently listed as for sale at 4-5".

That picture looks like a calobrensis to me. Sounds like your local store has issues with proper labling. At least something fishy is going on.

The weird thing is this same store sold those hybrids AS hybrids for a while.

Regardless what this new fish is (and I'd bet my left....um.....ARM that they are hybrids) how do you just "come up" with Astatheros civalis? It's not even close enough to anything to claim a misspelling.

I've been an outspoken defender of flowerhorns and other "intentional" hybrids...bred and labeled as something different than a wild-type species... but this is something totally different.

To give a hybrid a species name is just asking for trouble.
