The fish in this link looks very similiar to what you posted to me. It's hard to say for sure though
http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Amphilophus&species=calobrensis&id=685

Did the labled loisellei x Chairel hybrids look like that? I have never seen one in person. I have to say the fish picture you posted does look like an Astatheros type fish.

I agree. There is an Astatheros look to them. BUT REMEMBER, DCT sold a calobrensis / grammodes hybrid recently too, so it wouldn't be precedent setting to have a calobrensis based hybrid coming from DCT.

I'm very familiar with calobrensis, and from my in person view I can say they are not calos. Perhaps calo/carp? Who knows?

The question is where did that made up species name come from?

Well, in all fairness, if your LFS is like ours around here (or the ones that used to be here), theyll say anything & call anything something else to get it out the door.

Ridiculous... It's one thing to create hybrids and another to give scientific names to them & selling them as rare new species.

VRCR: true, but this one has a massive inventory of all types of fish (pretty impressive actually). And CA cichlids only make up about 5% of it. It is odd and telling that they have used names that DCT has used as "species" in the past. Case in point, Conkelii.

Hey Chris is that store the "exclusive outlet" for those fish? The hybrids I mean?

Dude, thats ridiculous. I mean there's already enough confusion amongst hobbyists who are educated on the topic of Taxonomy... now there are people just making up names for fun? Kind of pisses me off.

I've been to that store....VERY large store with a big inventory.... I bet the rent on that store is astronomical....

Hmmm.....

Here's what they were calling Astatheros cincaia a while back. Looks pretty darned similar!

Definitely not altifrons...... They are anywhere from 4" to about 8" (there is a group of them).

They look just like the fish that were being labeled as loisellei/carpintis hybrids at the same store. Conkel was selling them that hybrid at one time (openly as a hybrid). I don't know what the %&$* is up. Someone isn't being truthful. I mean, you just don't accidentally create a back story on a new species!

This is the same place that was selling this similar "new species" recently (and for years before):

Someone is being cute for the purpose of making money and throwing out a "NEW SPECIES" name whenever they feel like it. The question is, is the LFS doing it or is the supplier?

I know some people are going to try to read in to this, but I really don't care. IT IS WHAT IT IS. The owner was not in today, or I'd have asked him WTF?

I dont think its the supplier , because the store owners prices are triple than Conkels and Ira's prices and he names these things sometimes to sell to his customers that aren't knowledgeable about the particular fish, if the guy gets his stock from Don, I wonder why other vendors and store owners that buy from Conkels keeps legit species and the right names, because he will let you know if the fish are hybrids or not. From what I understand:D plus you said chris that he keeps fish looking nasty in them tanks just for sales he don't care
