All valid points but take a look at the statistics on inner city shootings. The vast majority are hand guns. Chicago/ny are out of control. No more stop and frisk. I'd bet the number of deaths due to gun violence is far higher with hand guns compared to long arms.

Well that was a half-informed statement. NYC, LA and Chicago have very high numbers of gun deaths, but they have very large populations as well. So while they have the most gun deaths, they DO NOT have the most deaths per capita. I don't even think they make the top 10. Outside of these cities the gun laws are more relaxed, and that is where the guns come from. Just go to the next town over!

But you are right, hand guns are the majority of the deaths. They can be concealed and they are relatively affordable.

About 63% of the deaths from guns are suicides. Additionally, you are more likely to accidentally shoot someone than legally to protect yourself. You are MUCH more likely to commit suicide with your gun than to use it for protection. Don't get me wrong - I shoot guns from time to time. I've been hunting a number of times. But when I step back and take a look at what we need out of our guns, I think it's probably less than we currently have.

On a side note, every year people are accidentally shot by their dogs.

its stats like that tend to demonize them, car deaths, over dose, falling in the shower, choking on chicken bones, drowning, lot of ways to die, whither on purpose or accident. anything can sound bad depending what context you use to state it in.

the second amendment was made when there were fewer types of "arms" available. I don't think anyone is going to try to take away single-shot rifles in America. Ever.

Hello; At the time of the creation of the second ammendment the single shot muzzel loader was the best technology available. My guess is that had the better technology of repeater types been available at that time, that they would have been in use.

Again consider what happened in Australia in 1996. Most are restricted from having handguns and many types of rifles. A further point is that general "self defense" in not considered a valid reason for having a handgun. The authorities also get to make the decision.

It might also be informative to look up the increased rates of assualt type crimes since the the gun ban was enforced.

I'm sure we can all agree that there is a point where something is too destructive to give to the average Joe.

Hello; There are already such restrictions in place for many such items. Again let me stress that the term "assault rifle" is a generic term that can (and has been applied) be applied to most any version of a semi-auto loader. The AR platform (sometime called the black rifle) is not so much different from any other semi-auto. Any such ban is likely not to be about the cosmetic appearance, but about the semi-auto function.

It may also be worth considering that there are already laws on the books that cover any activity we can do with a firearm.

Funny you bring up cosmetics of a rifle because here in Canada we have rifles banned because of appearance. One of them is a mosberg model One version a 22LR plinker the other looks like an AK. The one that looks like an AK is a restricted weapon the other is not. The only difference is the stock. However our government made laws based on the looks of a firearm. Totally nits but the liberal public now feel safer. There has to be some way of getting the truth out to prople. But we live in a society where movie stars and pop singers tell us what to believe and people listen.

I wasnt saying nyc and chicago lead the way in gun related deaths but that handguns are responsible for those deaths over long arms. Sounds prett informed to me lol

Yeah I totally agree with the first part, to a point. I'm sure the founding fathers would have no problem with a revolver or something, but I don't believe that they would have just give the right to bear "arms" (without distinction) if they knew what kind of arms would be invented later. They hadn't really experienced mass shootings.

I read up on Australia - I didn't know about their gun laws! But from what I read it was largely a success. There seems to be some controversy on the subject, but from what I can see homicide is down. Also there hasn't been a single mass shooting since the ban!
