Hi everybody

I have a 132gal tank that will soon be empty and would love to add some puffs. I fell in love with my dwarfs so I have a bit of experience.
Sadly here in South Africa we only have figure eights, dwarfs and the green spotted puffers.

I like the idea of a few figure 8's in the tank, but do they are they as personable as the gsp?

And how many of each option can I put in there?
I know they can't be mixed.

Thanks

Figure 8s are very personable. Just keep in mind that GSPs require full marine conditions as adults, and Figure 8s require brackish conditions. I would think that 3 Figure 8's would be fine in a 132g (not sure of the dimensions?).
There are a few fully freshwater species across Africa, although I'm not sure of there availability in South Africa.

You cant mix dwarfs, gsp and F8 they all require different salinity. But if you do a brackish tank you could add a bunch of stuff with your F8's mollies, archers, scats, mono sebea, orange chromide.

Another thought is do a full marine with a few GSP and you can add some nice damsels and a niger trigger. I did that set up once in a 125 and it looked great.

Hi thanks for the replies. I am fully aware that those puffers can't be mixed. I am really leaning towards a few figure 8's with some large mollies. Maybe even a brackish eel? But if I only add figure 8's what would be a good stocking amount? Not too keen on a full marine setup.

^ what are the exact dimensions of the tank? Give us that info, and we can better help advise you on how many of each may work?

Also, since your in S.A, shouldn't it be easier to get fish from Africa? Coz if you can, you could also look into other 100% freshwater puffers such as a Congo puffer if you want something different? (although they would probably work better solo in a 40G)

I know it's strange but it's next to impossible for us to get hold of any other puffers. I've looked high and low but those are the only ones I'm able to find. These are approximate measurements length 72 depth 17 height 23

Thats a pretty decent size tank for a group of F8's if you want to go the light brackish route :)

I'm not sure on the amount you can add but if you do decide to add a brackish eel, I'm not sure what types you can get but G. tile's are the most common we see here, be careful that it isn't big enough to eat or try to eat the puffers. I made that mistake and the eel died the next day :(
