I prefer 1mm round pea gravel,watching the rays pound it in search for food is for me observing natural behaviour.Theres always areas where the glass bottom is exposed because i dont have it that thick for the reasons already mentioned (Anarobic problems).It also allows these fish some security,they dont have the ability to burry themselves for nothing,not to mention the fact they have better traction on a uneaven surface.Sand looks good too but can get wafted towards the intake on external filters and wiers causing damage to the pump,for this reason i choose fine "smooth" gravel.
