Another sick ray thread........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Treatment with antibiotics appears to be an effective means of eliminating fungal infections. Fungi are generally not susceptible to antibiotics, it is likely that the successful treatment of fungal infections is a secondary effect of treating an underlying bacterial infection.

Check out the rays and meds page 2.. something like nitrafurazone might be in order ?

So you WOULD medicate? It's not "too late"??? So I want to treat for a bacterial infection????

Are your lights off too?

Only when I'm NOT doing waterchanges......LOL Yeah they're off.

Lemme see if I got this right? I threat the fungus but it will just come back cause the fungus is a byproduct/result of the root cause of the sickness.... So the fungus is just a side effect???? Therefore should not be addressed until the root of the problem is? NOW..... My question..... The root problem..... is it really sick or just extremely stressed (and the root cause of the fungal infection may be stress)

Now if the fungus was stress induced I need to treat it? But if the rays fungus is a "symptom" I need to ignore it and concentrate on the root cause of the sickness....

Nitrofurazone....... should I just use this to be safe? If so I'll try to track some down.

Honestly I am not really sure I don't have alot of personal experience with ray treatment.. but this seems like a pretty advanced case and I am guessing meds are in order if mild meds like salt or pimafix aren't effective.

So...... Get the Pima and use immediately. Order Nitrofurazone and hope it lives till it arrives........ And don't treat the fungus?

The salt...... using API (in the blue milk carton) at regular dose.....(1 lb/100 gallons) Should I be using this at a stronger dose? I'm guessing I should be using at at least DOUBLE the recommended dosage? Or more?

Thanx Mike. Thought I was a little light.......

Does anyone care to to try to ID the problem?

Do you guys think this is a bacteria problem or a case of parasites or simply way too stressed from being W/C then shipped then moved in with aggressive rays then moved again????

I've read then read some more but it just gets confusing when your own animal is on the line.

Just got back from LFS. They have Prazi and Jungle parasite tabs. I allready have Prazi at home. Is there any advantages of the Jungle tabs OVER Prazi? If it is indeed a bacterial infection then niether one of these meds are going to do any good are they?

Nitrafurazone.....LOL Or at least that's what happened when I asked for it. Any other suggestions for anti-bacterial med?

Do we all agree that this appears to be a bacterial infection?

Prazi and Jungle tabs won't do much because they are designed for internal parasites..

definitely seems like a bacterial infection with a possible secondary fungal infection.. try the heavy dose of salt, it usually clears these things up and aren't as stressful as antibiotics..

I've used Triple Sulfa on rays with no ill effects.. Nic has used Maracyn and Maracyn 2 with no ill effects. Might look into those for broad range anti-bacterial as you can buy them at your local favorite corporate pet store ;)
