I've read all the threads about substrate and they haven't helped me much. I still don't know what to get. I know I want something the rays can bury in, yet I don't want anything really fine that can get sucked up in the python. I've read in all my stingray literature never use anything with silica yet I read these threads and it seems a lot of people do. I went to my LFS and the guy recommended natural ocean I think it was called. It was dry sand straight from the beach (for home aquarium use). Would this have traces of salt in it and if so is this ok? Can someone that has had stingrays for a long time please tell me a few substrates (the brand so I know how to order it)that the rays like and that is ok for them. I think there is a lot of misumderstanding about this among the newbies on the forum and we need some help taking the guess-work out. Thanks in advance!

All I know is that I use aquaquartz pool filter sand and it works very well. I have 2 rays on/in it and I've never seen them have an irritation or have it stick to them.

I looked it up and that does contain silica. The guys at my LFS said they'd never heard of the no silica rule. So, whats supposed to be the big deal about silica anyway?

but is this pool filter sand so small that it gets sucked up into a python or lets say a filter when a ray is startled and does it come in different colors.

Not the stuff that I have.

the pool filter sand i have doesnt get sucked into the pythin unless i try to get it in or i get too close to it [about half inch or closer]

and it contains silica, so im still debating if i should just place em on it and see what happens or not?

I hear you, Bsixxx, I'm pretty confused too. Lots of people here use pool filter sand, but I called the local pool store and they said it contains silica. But if everyone's rays are ok...
I looked up silica on the internet and it said quarts and silica are the same thing and that beach sand is made of silica.

i have tanks with Sand and a tank with gravel. the tanks with sand i am starting not to like as much. sand gets into filters and i loose a little during water changes. tank with gravel is carib sea ( peace river ) i have 5" rays in there that can bury them selfs. it is the finest gravel i have found. pool filter sand ?

silica is like razor blades, very sharp cristals. Estes brand is coated.

So Dave do you know of any sand that is ok for rays?? I have estes know but I dont like the colors they come in (wish they had a tan or brown)

I would like to get to the bottom of this because I want to get something different....

Thanks.....
