Hey David,
Long time no talk! How are things with you? I still have the pair of Leos that I got from you so many years ago.
Where can we buy some Estes Sand or Gravel at a great price?
Can you give us the website?
Thanks,
Dat

John, does the gravel have a specific size? If the rays can bury themselves in it that's probly the way I will go. Was it expensive? Did you order it or find it at your lfs?

Dave I didnt realize that estes had other colors other than white and black sand......, I just checked their website.....

http://www.estesco.com/aqua.html

As far as gravel compared to sand....., I actually think its nice to have both.., it makes it look alot more natural (if thats what your going for)

And as far as Estes......, I've never had a problem with them bothering my rays....., and it sticks but it doesnt stick really well....., my rays have no problem getting it off in one flick of their disk......,

I think im going to order some tan sand soon.......

I like sand better but I'm scared of it getting into the filter. After spending so much on a filter it would be terrible for it to get ruined from sand. Does this happen often?

this is why you should have a wetdry filter system...., not a canisther or anything like that can break on you...

ever thought about a light layer of river rock?

covers the bottom yet rays cant hide and you hardly ever have to vac.

David, doesn't this slow down the filter, because I did this with a small seahorse tank and it did. But, that was just a small azoo filter, so maybe it wouldn't with a filter as big as the fx5. Gr8Karma, I want a substrate that the rays can bury in.

I think it is good for the rays to be able to hide if they need to....

Your canister filter suction is going to be miday in the tank not at the bottom to suck up the sand so that will work fine, just keep it like halfway down from the top. As for this whole silica sand thing i have seen many many tanks with rays in it and no problems. Like dave said it is supposed to be sharp and cause irritation on the bottom of your ray. Personally i dont use anything just bare bottom to breed my rays. I would use a small river rock thats easy to clearn and your rays cant hide in it whats the sense of having your ray hiding all the time under the sand? Rays dont need to hide they will get used to it and just adapt with no problems.
