It would take many years to grow a bichirs to 30". With that being said, you should hang on to your bichirs to grow them out.

There are a lot of wrong info on other site since these fish are still fairly new to the fish hobby. It's only in the last 5 years that these fish were made readily available to different part of the world. MFK is the best resource to find the most accurate information on these fish.
