Anti-backflow for sump return?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with rallysman. I use a check valve AND I drill the holes in the return line. Anything to full proof the potential hazards of a 240g water spill in my living room.

:headbang2 I'm a firm believer in redundancy. Murphy's law is a b*tch.

Sorry the check valve WILL eventually fail and you WILL have a flood.

Get a bigger sump.
I agree!! The check valves only last a few months in saltwater tanks and they need replacing. Bigger sump is the best way to go. I only paid $250 for a 120 gallon sump for my 450 gallon tank and have no problems.

yep get a bigger pump ...forget the check valve ..cant always count on it...my 210gallon with 40gallon sump no check vavle just with the hole on my return im ok:headbang2

Pump? did you mean sump?

A bigger sump might not always cure the problem. If th return is half way down in a 300g tank, it'll overflow a 150g sump.

Drilling a hole right below the water surface is cheap (basically free) insurance. Even if you don't "need" it, it's still a good idea.

You know as I re-read the first original post I finally caught the word "REEF" as in saltwater...salt-creep will foul a swing check valve as well as a dirty line in a freshwater system.
Rallysman got the solution, 2 holes just below the surface to break the siphon.
Sorry my bad...

I have even used 3 holes to make sure. But durring regular maintenance you can just check to make sure that the holes are still working. Basically once a month your going to turn the sump pumps off and see if the syphon breaks work.
