I know this is strange but I have a true phobia of ants, lol. Anyway you can get this sticky stuff, it's a liquid and put it in a dish and the ants are attracted to it, they take it back to the other ants and it kills them. That is the safest way. Oh I just can't stand ants. lol
i am with you... my phobia is ants.. ants in bunches..... one here or there doesn't bother me.. but if their in a gang......:WHOA:

Down here we have stuff called "antrid" ... Its a runny liquid that the ants love, not sure if u have it there, but it works a treat. If the ants are comin in to eat the algae, clean it up and they'll disappear, they only go for a food source until its exhausted, once its not there, the go look for another one (like your bin perhaps)

cornstarch based baby powder, drives them off and dessicates them and their eggs. Had this problem on top of my sump awhile back. worked like a charm.

wow baby powder...good to know.. and harmless and smells good:D

Don't know why they would be going after algae as ants are carnivores. Anyway clean up the algae and they will be gone. the remaining I would use Terro (very carefully) THIS WILL MAKE THEM GONE. GL

There are about 12,000 species of ants and they're not all carnivores. Secondly, if the ants are carnivores as you say, why would cleaning up the algae make them gone? You're confusing me...

So you just sprinkle it around where they're coming in? They just have to walk thru it? Like with boric acid? That's what I used a few summers ago when I had a problem and it worked great.

Ive had good luck with grants ant baits.
Also diatomaceous earth powder based ant killer. Its non toxic kills them by wrecking thier exoskeleton.
