Any A/V gurus here? PS3 and HDMI/optical audio connections...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you have one hdmi port on your surround sound, and you plug the hdmi from the ps3 to the ss, there would be no way to get the picture from the ps3 to the tv. Sound through an optical cable is the closest thing your going to get to hd sound. I feel I'm not missing out on anything when it comes to sound. The full HD picture quality is what really counts.

You're going to need to do Is get a HDMI and a good set of component cables. The HDMI will go into the TV (of course) and the Component Audio will go into your suround sound.

THEN you need to go into you PS3 Xmedia bar and go to system settings and find your audio and visual settings. THis will Allow you to tell the PS3 that you want to run visual with HDMI and Audio with Component even though they are running to different devises. I have done this with one of My PS3s with a old stereo I had b/c it had better sound quality.

They say that HDMI will produce better sound and visuals but that is up for debate just buy a good HDMI and the sony brand Components and it will work great.

Hope that helps.

P.S. when you hook up a new visual cord you need to have the supplied cord (red/white/yellow) hooked up AND the new HDMI. tell the PS3 that you want to run HDMI and it will switch and you need to change the input of the TV. When the HDMI input is up you will have 30 seconds to accept the changes or it goes back to default (RED/YELLOW/WHITE) I know it sounds like alot but once you get used to the XMB (cross media bar) you'll be ok.

I got my son a PS3 for Christmas and the other day I got around to sitting down and playing a game with him and it was then that I noticed that only one controller came with the unit. That's pretty lame considering how the thing cost.

hmm thats right, that would mean no picture! if i remember correctly, this is how everything is set up right now:

HD cable box --> HDMI cable --> HDTV
SS Receiver --> HDMI cable --> HDTV
HD cable box --> optical audio cable --> SS Receiver

this gives me surround sound while watching tv and DVDs

yeah that's another option. but i think i may go with the optical audio cable and just buy a switcher. im assuming this would give me a little better sound quality than component cables.

that way i can switch off between surround sound for watching TV via the cable box and playing games/bluray via the PS3. looks something like this:

i guess it wont be true HD sound but the only way i see around that is to buy a better AV receiver which i dont want to do at this point. i dont spend that much time in front of the tv!

any other suggestions?

I'd been meaning to gripe/post about it but you kinda beat me to it.

maybe your tv has a hdmi in and out? ps3 to tv and then tv to receiver via hdmi?

^ most surround sounds only have an output hdmi port. In most cases you would connect the hdmi from the ps3 to the tv. Then buy an optical cable and connect it from the ps3 to the surround sound.... that's how mine is set up, and it works great.

this is the correct way. optical is 5.1 digital . hdmi can produce 7.1 but your receiver cant
