Thinking of changing my career path up a little bit and focus more towards the accounting side of the business field. Just curious if anyone is an accountant that can offer any input/words of wisdom/etc.

i majored in accouting, graduated in '05. i went to work straight into public accounting with KPMG. they are one of the Big 4 accounting firms. as far as job availablity goes, i think that this one of the best and highest paying fields for a recent college grad.

with that said, if you choose to go into public accounting, you need to know that you will work A LOT. many times i put in 80 hour weeks and worked weekends. its not for the faint of heart. i put in two years there and left. its a very good experience and i dont regret it at all. after leaving kpmg i managed to get a job with a public bank as their SOX Auditor in the internal audit department.

if youre looking for something with a good work/life balance, id recommend internal audit/sox related. the Big 4 also have internal audit departments, but its a little harder to start in there w/o any experience off the bat. another thing about the internal audit field is that the certification (CIA) is MUCH easier than the beastly CPA if thats a route youd like to take.

lemme know if you have any other questions :)

I have to agree with jcard. During tax season I work 6-7 days straight for 5months. Tons of hours. I like being an accountant, its a good field to be in. Sometimes yes it can be boring but so are lots of jobs out there.

i think most jobs are boring. and the ones that arent, dont pay well. its working for me so far. just put your time in and youll be at six figures before you know it
