Any African Fish Suggestions?

Howdy,

funny that no one has asked this, yet: What are your water parameters? (especially pH and hardness)

I also think the mormyrids sound like a good idea. The glass cat you're thinking of is probably Pareutropius buffei, but I'd say they don't get big enough to avoid becoming lunch. Other possibilities could be any one of loads of Synodontis catfish species, one of the smaller Distichodus sp. or a Parachanna if you're not in the US.

So your bichirs tore up your butterfly fish? The senegal or the ornate? or both :(

Maybe an African knife?

It was the senegal. I was able to get him out before they killed him, but now he's in a 3 gallon tank with no room to swim. :-( It's ok. That just means I get to buy a new tank.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mormyids and African Knife sound like the best option for me.

Vanimate, don't you think that the bichirs and ctenopoma would attack the congo tetras? They have long fins. I think that's what made the Butterfly so tempting.

Good to know, as I was going to put african butterfly fish with my bichirs as well. Saves me some money! :)

I've read that congo tetras can get along quite nicely with bichirs and ctenopoma. They get upto 4 inches long too.

I was going to suggest an African Brown Knife and/or Congo Tetras. I think the Congo Tetras will be fine, because they can swim out of harms way, whereas the butterfly fish just hung around.

I would think that they would be fine, as I dont think a ctenopoma or bicher can catch them. I also have an african tank with bichers, ctenopoma and a ABF, with lots of anubias for cover.

Someone suggested distichodus, but I wouldnt recommend that, as they are quite nippy and are real bastards.

I concur. D. sexfasciatus and D. lussoso are almost sadistic when they get larger. I once had a 6" D. sexfasciatus peck a 12" sengalus to death. :( Plus, D. sexfasciatus and D. lussoso both get HUGE, well over a foot. The more peaceful dwarf Distichodus species, such as D. affinis, which only gets to around 7-8 inches, would be fine though.

How does your ABF coexist with your bichirs? Any nipping or biting?

Thanks
