i have a 3000 gallon pond in my front yard with 34 koi. we are having trouble controlling the algea in it and i was wondering if there was any fish i could put in it that wouldn't die in the winter. it gets down to about 50 degrees at the bottom. we had most of the koi survive the first winter. so if you have any ideas i would appreciate it.

no, I keep a big pleco in mine til september, then i bring it back inside. Thats going to be your only option for an algae eater. other than that more live plants to compete with algae for nutrients

If it was a little warmer I'd suggest a tilapia.

We are talking attached algae and not floating (non-filamentous)?

Are you feeding the koi too much that they're not eating it?

What have you tried to stop it?

we have a 300 watt algae light and it's both floating and attached. the attached i don't care as much about the attached stuff. and i am not feeding them too much. any food i throw in there is gone in a minute. never get any in the filter or anything. those koi are pigs. they have over tripled in size since we bought them in the spring.

i have 3 plecos in my house i could use. one of them is 13 inches long right now. i bet it would like some freedom in the pond.

throw him out there in the spring. i bet he'll grow like crazy. mine grew from 3"-9" in like 3 months

why not go ahead and toss him in? he should do fine. the water reads at 74 right now.

Algae could be as a result of fish load. UV and still floating algae?
