If you are, can you give me some info? I know I should call and talk to them, but I would rather get an "insiders" opinion before talking to someone whose job is to persuade me to join.

Here is the deal: I want to do something bigger then myself. Apparently, if I join the National Guard, I go train for one weekend out of the month, and I can keep my normal job. Also, I get to go help out when my country needs me. This is the part I am having qualms about. I WANT to go help with natural disasters, and famine, etc. I don't especially want to go fight the war. Is there anyway I can join the National Guard, and not fight?

Don't get me wrong. If the draft was initiated, I would fight (and die) for my country. Wanting to do something and willing to do something are two different things. I am just curious if there is a way I can specify that I want to work in the U.S. I am also well aware that if the crap hits the fan, and they need us, I will be sent out, regardless of whether or not I "want to", and I would go willingly.

Basically, what should I expect by joining the NG, and is there a way where my focus can be on natural disasters?

I think you would be better off as a mall cop right now :D

?

I would love to do something such as Habitat for Humanity, but I would be losing (a lot) of money.

I am fine with making 0 dollars, just not too keen on going broke/homeless. If I can find something that puts me up with a bed and some food, and puts me to work rebuilding homes, or such, I would be down with that...

And btw, I am not desperate for a job. This is to do something humanitarian-like. Which has nothing to do with being a mall cop :D

I just meant it would be safer right now, but really anything to do with being a humanitarian either costs you money or you break even. if you want to get paid to help people I would recommend going to school to become a paramedic.

....

I guess I wasn't really making myself clear.

I don't want to make money. I am well aware that that is not reasonable. I can't afford to go broke. I want to break even. Nothing more, nothing less.

teach for america or ACE (the alliance for catholic education) might be options if you want to do humanitarian work. TFA is free but ACE pays.

Awesome, will definitely look into it! Thanks Druu...
