Any Americans here, that are with the National Guard?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wasnt aware til recently that our guardsmen were intended for service in places other than on our soil.Look into FEMA for diaster response, they handle that,or they are supposed to .

national guard infantry....
and by the sound of it...thats not for you. if you want to do something that is going to make u feel all warm and fuzzy inside...dont sign up to be a soldier. how do you feel about carrying a weapon..? if this thread took a wrong turn and humanitarian isnt really what u were looking for...if u feel a calling to help your fellow american, and dont want to fight a war...why not be a firefighter? rescues...natural disaster assistance...

i was in the national guard for 6 years...i spent 1 of 5 summers at home. the rest were spent training or fighting. dont get me wrong...thats what i signed up for. but understand what you are getting into. no matter what the current recruiting slogan is..."making a difference" "one weekend a month" "free college tuition"...this is a life changing decision...and a whole different life style. the guard was a party in the 70's but its moving toward full blown army these days. i dont know you...but it doesnt sound like thats what u r looking for

ya right now all of our forces are spread out all over east Asia that our "reserves" are not really reserves anymore.

This thread did take a wrong turn, lol. People seem hell-bent on telling me that the army isn't for me, wars aren't for me, I don't know what I am getting myself into, blah blah blah. I know a war isn't what I am looking for. What I am looking for is some type of organization that will allow me to help others by rebuilding homes, responding to disasters, etc. My entire point of this thread (perhaps I wasn't clear enough in the beginning) was to find out if that was possible with the National Guard. If not (and I am seeing it is not, I was under the impression I would stay on our soil), then does anyone have any other suggestions?

If you aren't wanting to go to war but you do want to help people try the Red Cross.. I really don't know much about them myself but when a disaster hits there usually the 1st one to come running.. Just my .02 worth..

TFA and ACE are all I've got if you want to stay on US soil. The Peace Corps is an option if you want to go overseas. Minimum of 2 year tour though.

disaster relief is one job of the national guard...but no one can tell if you'll stay in this country or not. we need to re-organize the state militia's...emergency response governed only by the state
