Put down a layer of polished river rock for drainage and "freevaporation" before you put down your sphagnum moss, THEN vermiculite/peat/soil/coconut husk/cypress mulch/etc. mixture.....that way any over-watering will drain into the rocks and not saturate the tank. 3 layers.....the 2nd, sphagnum moss will keep the top layer from mixing with the water ...just wet it and wring it out 1st before layering it downLast night I siliconed the cork background onto the tank. GOnna give it atleast 24hrs till I start adding the media. But I got plants with my order and I still have them in the damp paper towels they arrived in. So their gonna have to hang one more day. Im thinkn maybe I'll get my wife to help play with it tommorow night.
You want them to stay MOIST......not wet.
I would use polished river rock, THEN Spanish/Sphagnum moss (the stringy stuff that shrinks when it gets wet), THEN cypress mulch, personally. By doing ths combination, you can actually bury a submersible filter at the bottom and not worry about sand/soil/peat/vermiculite/coconut husk clogging it up.
