What kind of tank? Fish or reef? Pretty easy and cheap to build your own and canisters are not great for reefs.

Thanks guys...so heres the most recent update. My old science teacher just gave me his 125g reef. He had hair algae and couldnt keep up with the tank. Its been setup and running with 1x 150w MH and two backpacks in my basement while I sell his soft corals...and anything else I can to make enough money to set it up "the right way".
All points aside it will eventually be a mixed reef (mainly sps, then lps/chalice, then some show piece softies that I have had forever)
Im going to go with koralias for circulation, and have two of the 75g remora skimmers for skimming. I would also like to eventually stock it heavily with fish, including two different tangs. (Chevron and a blue hippo) Because of the heavy bioload I am planning on I am still looking into filtration except now on a much grander scale...still dont want to/cant go the sump route. The tank cant be drilled and I have to somewhat do this on the cheap (or as cheap as possible...I predict it will be a year, to a year and a half before I have it running the way I want it)
ANYWAYS...eheim or a fluval FX5? Im leaning towards the FX5 because I can get one shippped for what looks like $225 off of ebay. Thanks, Flesh

hey fleshy.. canistiers i know.. i have fx5.eheim 2080 and ehiem 2075 . fx5 by far has the most gph flow. 2080 holds lots more media and polishes water far better and a lot quieter.
what media do u plan to run in it for salt? i wouldnt think u would want a lot if any biomedia for a reef tank. maybe carbon and phosphate remover?
if u plan of using biomedia the 2075 eheim come with all u need for around 200$. over 300 gph.
on my 300 i have 2 fx5's . on my 125 i have 2 2080's. the water in the 125 is 10X clearer.

I have an Ehiem 2229 hooked up to 90g along with a fluval 404 for mech.
2229 /2227 are great bio filters for those areas in your home where a true wet dry would not work. All that said and done you would still need some mechanical filter such as your Marineland to filter the water.

To close out this thread I am now the happy owner of an eheim 2213...but its on a planted tank.
