Any FIN cutters out there?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To stay on topic no I would not cut any fish fins. I just don't see the point.

i would but id be afriad to. Some of my gar have some f'd up fins from fighting, id love to fix them, but id be afraid to kill my prized fishys

I have an ornate bichir that has always had somewhat deformed pectoral fins, no idea if it is from damage or just genetic. Would probably be worth a try, but I doubt I'd ever actually do it.

I have a rescue pit and she is uncut in anyway either. The tail whacking is a major PITA though! I would never cut the fins of any of my fish just to rectify looks. Odd fins give it chracter and since most of my cichlids are in schools, I prefer to have an odd man out because it helps me tell them apart (isomorphic and all look the same within a school) and get attached to certain ones. For some reason I have always been closer to "special" fish with issues. Like its charity work or something lol...

I have a fish i'd like to try it on, but he is a lionfish, so I don't know how well that would work.

If I had a "prized fish" and it happened to get ripped up a bit by another fish, I would absolutely cut its fins. The fish will only be out of the water for a very short time. As long as you had a game plan, you could most likely have the fish out, cut , and back in in under a minute as long as you have a second pair of hands to hold the fish down on a flat surface. If I had a high end fish that costed a big chunck of change, I'd want it to look as good as it can.

FYI - When this procedure is done it usually entails sedating the fish, hence another added stress if it never wakes up!!!

I couldn't justify it for aestetic reasons, but health ones, yes. If the fish had problems living day in and out due to a mangled fin ect.. then I would say it would be worth the potential cost to do it. personally my fishs qualities of life is my priority.

Is it nesessary to sedate if it is out for a short period of time? I've seen videos of asian aros getting their fins sliced to get bigger fin growth I can see where this might take longer to do but to just doa quick fix on a mangled fin I wonder if it is less stressful to just get them in out and back in quick

the only fish I have ever thought about doing it to is, a goldfish with fins longer then its body. I think it may be able to move better with them shorter.
