Any freshwater puffers other than dwarfs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got back from an LFS, and was talking with an employee about gettting freshwater puffers into the store. They did mention that a few of the brackish puffers (figure 8 was the one they used as an example) could be converted to live in full fresh. I'd assume there would be health issues that would follow from that conversion though, right?

Abei puffers are very rare, I would recommend NOT converting a F8 to fresh.. it would definitely cause health problems/shorter life span. They prefer brakish(Low-end brackish water (SG = 1.005 - 1.008); rather than fresh. Abei puffer would be a good choice though, doesn't get too large and is a true FW puffer. If you can find one, scoop him up!

Yeah you can have it in a 30g for life. I'm not too sure on price, I've never seen one at any of my LFS, they are more common in the UK

Hmm...I'll have to check with my regualr LFS (not the one previously referred to, that's the first time I've been to that store and I probably won't be going back) to see what they can do. They have offered in the past that if they don't have something that I'd like in stock that they can get it ordered in. They don't mind ordering specific fish as long as they have a gauranteed sale on it.

For those that have done it before, how difficult is it to maintain a brackish tank? I'm considering going that direction and trying my hand at an F8 puffer, they look like they'd be worth the extra effort...

I am just setting up F8 now after considering them for a long time and tried freshwater pufs. From what I have been reading I would suggest that it is one of the easier puffs to deal with when dealing with salt as the salt added back in does not need to be the same each time, you can add fluctuations as would happen in their natural environment.

It does seem like a good way to get started in brackish, and it'll be a small step up in care from the other fish that I've kept, which I think I'm ready for. Sounds like an F8 is the way to go - it's the right size, right care requirements, everything I'm looking for. That also opens up the options for a few other species as well. I'm thinking one F8 and a couple of bumblebee gobies would make for a great setup.

Abei's and Cross River puffers are two of my most sought after puffers, although even if i found one i don't have the space to house one right now... but best of luck finding one when the time comes, since i'm sure it won't be long before you get bit by the puffer bug...
