Hes got a weird red coloration on his tail, and Im not sure what it is. Was hoping that some one here might know if there is something wrong.

50% water change done. Can you tell me what that stuff is? And if there is a medication or something for it.

Check for ammonia. Could be ammonia burn.

i agree ^^^^^^^^^^^

Did you add salt like I said? I would check the tank perameters if I were you.

How big is the bala?

Went to ye olde PetSmarte and got some strip tests. One for amonia and the other an all purpose kind of one. Amonia was at a lvl of 1.0 when I tested, Im assuming it was much higher, but the water change lowered it considerably. I ran the all purpose tests and the Ph was quite low (Ill make another PS run tomorrow to get something to raise it). Actually here are all the resuslts:

GH: 120
KH: 80
pH: 6.0
NO2: .5
NO3: 200

So after seeing all these results I hit it with a dose of Prime and will test again shortly. I hope all ends up well. Oh yeah, while I was at PS I saw this lonly clown loach and just had to have it!

Almost forgot, the Bala is about 4.5"

And one last question, is there a product out there that will raise the alkalinity of the tank?

Ok, the salt will help with the nitrite burning and stress, the ammonia and nitrites need to cycle out of that tank, and I wouldn't mess with pH until that is taken care of.

Nitrates were 200, that's a no-no cuz, you want to keep them under 40. Mine stay under 20 with weekly 30% water changes and Purigen.

If you want to raise your pH and alkalinity, go into the bird aisle and get a box of oyster shells. Put the oyster shells in a media bag or an old pantyhose and put in the back of the filter. The shells will start to dissolve and buffer the water much better than the powders will.

Keep up the water changes until Ammonia and Nitrite are both 0.

Kvarstwasser will raise the alkalinity as will baked shell/coral chips, with those parameters it seems like an early case of hemoraghic septicemia. It can be caused by bacterial infections or (indirectly) pH imbalance, and other water factors such as ammonia, nitrates, or chlorine, any thing which destroys the slime coat and causes chronic skin irritations. The water change and testing is a great start. Stress coat, 1 tbsp/gallon salt, and even melafix will help sooth the skin and regenerate slime coats but if the infection is all ready deep seated you may need a med like maracyn or even maracyn plus.

The reason I asked the size is that I have heard that adult breeding condition males (10")+, sometimes get a breeding flush to the fins (I have never actually seen it though.)
