Any ideas for a school of fish to fit my setup?

Generally silvery fishes and slime-sucking fishes are to be avoided with gars, so I'd go with a group of big clown loaches if I had to choose from the previous suggestions.

Alright cool. The only problem I'm having is everybody wants like $75 for a decent size clown loach. Still might get some tinfoils to grow out in my 40.
if your thinking of tinfoils, might I suggest flag tails?
I'm pretty sure that flag tails fall under both the "slime-sucking" category and "silvery" category plus I'm pretty certain that they do best one per aquarium.

Have to agree with wiggles. Tinfoils will probably be shredded by the gars.
