I realize that wasn't the greatest example but, the fact is that two cichlids will create a cichlid. It doesn't matter what species the two mating cichlids are, the offspring are still cichlids.

I guess a better example would have been to use breeds of dogs, the resulting offspring would still be a dog.

Sorry about this derail, just wanted to clarify what I was trying to get at.

still hard to use that example since we breed the different breeds of dog ourselfs from the same strain more or less. we do not have any naturaly accuring german shepards or black labs. chichlids are totaly different species that are naturaly occuring.

any how we all know what your saying and like giving everyone a hard time:popcorn::ROFL::screwy::cry:

I'll just shut up now! :grinno:

All dogs ARE the same species Canis lupus familiaris, while all cichlids are not the same species.

The fact is that two cats will create a cat...but a tiger and lion will create a hybrid cat, called a liger which is bred for its skills in magic (Napoleon Dynamite).

Ok, ok, I get it! I should know better than to try to make a point at 2am.

By the way, Canis lupus familiaris is a subspecies descriptor, of which there a 37 total for the species Canis lupus, which includes everything from the Grey Wolf to the Poodle. How 'bout that for a hybrid?

It may have been tilapia buttikoferi. They're large, black cichlids with white/yellow vertical bars. However, this fish originates from West Africa, not central America. I doubt it was 18" if it was actually this fish.

Other possibilities include:
giant gouramy (osphronemus goramy)<--not a cichlid
low grade flowerhorn<--not a cichlid
stressed oscar (astronatus ocellatus)

^Not all of the fish above reach 18", slight exaggeration on the size??:D

not any of these ive got a gg had a oscar and looks nothin like a flowerhorn and had no stripes like the buttikoferi

could be a dark dovii!
most likely a Butti.

What's kind of shape is it? Now I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of Vieja maculicauda (the blackbelt) Most species of vieja and paratheraps are very colorful though, which still doesn't match the description.

Cuban? (Nandopsis tetracanthus) They still aren't all black and certainly won't reach 18".

Paratilapia polleni? Again, won't reach 18". They're also covered in white spots.

Herichthys Cyanoguttatus (texas) Perhaps stress/breeding dress. Still won't be all black or reach 18".

How about pictures or a more detailed description? I'm puzzled atm.
