Any iridescent shark experts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IDs can change their color between when they are young and adult. Pretty much any fish can, I just helped stock my local creek wih trout yesterday and when in the truck they were pale tan, soon as they hit the water they turned almost black! Just another example of how awesome fish are.

I have a question as well are there 2 fish labeled the ID shark? The ones I see now are striped but what used to be around here labeled ID shark was a shiny blue/black with a white belly and throat. Are these the same fish or not body structure and face look the same but colors are different. It was mentioned as well that ID's are quite predatory to small fish.
Amber n the boss what do your Ids look like as far as color?
I have read they are jumpers and of course flighty. The one we have in a 160 is calm as long as there are no nets in the tank. He is in with some CA cichlids and is doing well and eats sinking pellets right along side of them. Your a least have 2 together which I have read relaxes them a little as they are a schooling fish.
I hope this thread goes on for awhile as I too would like to learn a little more about them.

Fish are often mislabeled. Only the common ones are more likely to be labeled correctly.

May I suggest getting pictures of what you are talking about, if not your own, then pull them from google and then starting your own thread?

We should not muddle up this thread, or any for that matter.

Wasn't trying to muddle this thread just want to know if my ID is what this thread is about. They are interesting fish and any info here can help all ID shark owners.

Thank you to every one of you who responded to my post! Like I said I'm having a hard time getting good and reliable info on these guys! My LFS lead me to believe these guys were so easy and would be a breeze to care for. And boy as you know they were wrong! I knew I was getting into bigger fish from the start but by no means did I see a monster in my future...lol. Basically the only info they got right was they swim and need to eat anything else above that is a waste of time to go and even ask them a question! I'm very happy that I found the club as I simply found it by accident. I didn't know such places were out there.
When I started my tank 2.5 years ago I knew I wanted ID Sharks but I wasn't having luck buying little cheap ones from the big box stores. Actually I just lost an entire tank due to ICK and velvet that we got from buying poor quality fish. 2 weeks ago I found these guys that I rescued and I spent an entire week prepping for them being sure my water levels were perfect and planning bigger tank options. I have a deal working out with someone for a 150g tank used for $425. Problem is he has fish in it that I don't want so he is re homing them then I get the tank. We are committed to going to a 300g for them but first we need to have our home floors evaluated and probably re inforced for the weight. I also need to save for it but it's definitely in the plan. If not before the new year definitely soon after. LFS said they were raised in a 55g and in total there were 3. Knowing they grow quick I opted to only buy 2. He said if I went 150 or at least 6 ft long it would be more then enough for them. Finding this to be untrue we agreed ed to 300g but I can't see going any bigger then that. A pond is not an option since I love in Ohio and we have nasty winters. My LFS has a brick made above ground indoor pond Where They keep giant Koi and turtles. I have no idea what the cost would be for that but I do have room in my finished basement if I could make that work idk. But it is an option for us to discover if we need to.
Thanks again for all your responses especially Karl K. You seem to pop up on all my posts. Thank you for that. -Amber

And for what they look like. My profile pic is of the 2 of them. They are not shiney like the little cheap store ones. They are a dark gray to black on the top half with a white throat, under belly, and fin edges. They still have a streak of shimmer silver that runs from behind the gills and shoots back to the base of the tale fin.

I apologize - I thought your question was not what the OP is after (she is not confused about what she's got) but it was potentially interesting and worthy of its own thread. If you have merely an identification question, then pics are a must and again I'd suggest a new thread. Just a suggestion. I'm nobody, so if you feel differently, ignore freely :)

Hello and welcome. Please post pics I can't zoom in on your avatar. I.hear you as far as info on these guys goes. I have 2 in a 600 gallon they are 16"+ fun cats but do require alot of space!

I had trouble looking at the Av too. It does sound like your fish Amber are just like ours thank you for starting a good thread. Another piece of info I found was that 5 or more would make a better grouping of them. Can you imagine the tank that would require. Also found that they are a slower growing fish which I guess is kind of a good thing.

From all ive read these guys do require alot of space, and im thinking that 300g wouldnt be enough. They grow t0 3' or even larger sometimes, so theyr gonna require a pond or something :D!
Good luck Amber. Can you post a picture of them :D?

I don't know how to post a pic but if someone could tell me how I will!
As for my op I wasn't looking for someone to id my sharks, I know what I have. I was/am looking for someone reliable that I can ask specific questions too. My LFS was no help once I purchased them. I just never had a moment to come back and ask those questions. But I will now.
1. My sharks freak out during water changes. They will slam themselves into the glass repeatedly. They thrash so much that I think they are gonna jump out the top. Idk what to do. I've learned that for what changes to just skim the top opposite side from them and for the most part it works. But when it comes down to cleaning the gravel it's a nightmare! I've thought about removing them but I don't know what I could put them in with a lid. I thought about buying like a rubber made tote and using that but wasn't sure if it's safe to use plastic like that. I've placed 2 LG sword plants at both ends tank ends so when they do spaz at least there's some cushion. Any ideas on this would be appreciated.
