Any luck with algae eaters?

I had a bushy nose pleco when I first started my male and female tank. The female sorta left him alone, but the male was extremely aggressive. The pleco actually put up a fight and the barbs were gashing my male, so I thought he'd leave it alone. Nope, dead pleco eventually lol.
