Any of These Species Good for a 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can get any of those species and grow them out in a 55 imo. When you start noticing adolescent aggression move them to a bigger tank or divide them. At that point you'd have figured out who's male and who's female, who's got potential, etc, and can start picking out pairs and thinning out the group. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

IMO neets are the only one from the list that would be ok in a 55. The rest will all get too big.

This. I agree with his later post about not keeping anything much past 6" in a tank that's only 12" wide.

Maybe you're keeping different robertsoni than I did but mine were pretty darn mild as a group of 6 growing out to 3-4" in a 2'x2'x1' tank (then moved to a 4' tank.

Matt

Maybe you're keeping different robertsoni than most others keep. :p lol

A lot of people who have kept them have seen the same type of conspecific aggression, even at younger ages. There are always exceptions and how you setup the tank, how you introduce them, how many you start off with etc. are all variables that will come into play.

The breeding pair of cubans I had got to 5-6" pretty quickly, but once they started spawning, the growth slowed waaay down. I bet they didn't put on an inch in a year and 5 months of that was in a 300 gallon pond. All their energy went to spawning not growing.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

The more I research the neets, the more I

Yea. They are awesome...but a complete terror if they have tankmates besides other neets or if they are the top of the hierarchy. I have a large male that would demolish every tankmate he has if it werent for a much larger spawning pair of istlanum in the tank.

The only fish that has been as nasty, pugnacious and determined to terrorize that Ive ever had has been a Labiatus (RD) or a large male dovii...also, make sure you get a pair or 1m 2f etc. In my experience, the dominate male will kill all other males if they are in anything smaller than about 265g. I had to separate my males because the biggest wouldnt stop hunting and harrassing (24/7) the smaller until I did.
