i am thinking these guys have been stunted from being in the 35 for that long.

yeah I would put money on it..

I would really recommend looking into a small pond... Or something along the lines of at least 200 gallons. Pacu's keep growing no matter what, even if the water conditions are bad they won't be stunted. Even after they're "fully grown" they keep growing. But very very very slowly. He was a bit over a foot in a 35 gallon!?!? It's a VERY good thing you upgraded to a 90 gallon.

Edit: They won't be stunted but their growing will slow down. He should grow very quickly now that he's in a 90 gallon.

I was assuming he would grow quickly now. He can't grow too fast if he isn't eating, and I would agree with the stunted coment. He wasn't alone in the 35 until this January. I had 2 Pacu who were both over 12 inches in the 35 and 12 inch pleco. Talk about over crowding. I lost the pleco and the other pacu in a power outage, not enough oxygen. It broke my heart so I quicklly put him in a rubermaid bin and drug him over to a friends house who had power. It saved him. He's a bit of a trooper.

He doesnt eat that much, so I am wondering if there is something wrong with him.

:WTF::WTF::WTF:

How did that happen???

(On second thought, never mind. I can't stand to hear another "bad advice from Walmart fish dept." type story!)

there could easily be something wrong with him...given his past and the fact that he doesnt eat much. A healthy Pacu LOVES to eat.

Woah! That would definitely slow his growth. He's probably not eating a lot because he's not growing a lot.. However I'm no expert on disease.

dmed: regarding how that happended, I bought two thinking they would be about the size of silver dollars. Then after I learned how big they would get, about a year ago, I bought them a 75 gallon tank off some guy on craigs list. He was moving and couldn't find a home for his 12 inch pleco, so I offered to take him. After about 3 weeks with the tank up and running it leaked. All over my upstairs. Needless to say my husband was livid. I had to quickly pack all 3 fish back in the 35 and plead, beg, etc for my husband to get over it so we could put them in something bigger. Its a long story, don't get me wrong, I adore fred, but if I had it to do over I don't think I would have gotten him.

at least it sounds like you're going to learn from your mistake. I would seriously try to find someone to rescue it if you can't get bigger than a 90. There are LOTS of fish that will be great in a 90 for life, but a pacu isn't one of them. You could even keep a pacu with SHARP teeth ;) for a LONG time in there (Serrasalmus spp., etc.)

Not sure I follow the humor??? Do you mean pirhana? I'm a vegetarian, its one of the things i love about my Pacu. We jokeingly call him my vegetarian pirhana.

As for a rescue, if you know of any in the north east that will PROMISE not to use him as feeder fish then Please let me know. I have called two local aquariums and they said they would take him but they would probably wind up feeding him to a larger species.

I don't know about you but I would rather live in a cramped house than get eaten by something.

If I had to decide between living in a closet my whole life and a 50/50 chance of being eaten or being able to stretch my legs.....Give me the 50/50.
That's thats just my opinion.
