Here, I catch them on just about anything. As a kid I had luck with small hooks covered in tinfoil or fake skin lol. Lately I've been using bread, krill that my bichirs dont like, and bits of hotdog. All on either a spinning reel or 13' pole.
They like to hang out anywhere its a pain to get a hook like under a pile of fallen branches.

My set up is a 4' 6" ultra light rod, 2lb test XT Trilene. I use either a 1/32 or 1/64 size jig head. usually unpainted or a white jig head with a red/black eye. I use this motor oil color (which is a redish orange with red glitter) 1" twister grub from Bass Pro a lot. One fairly warm afternoon i was fishing a local lake near a pedestrian bridge and tossing it under neath the bring or along the shaded part of the water. I caught over 40 crappie with this thing! It was crazy all of them were between 6" and 9.5" so not ubber huge but fun. Find a small jig head and the smallest mister twister you can and jig it slowly near some structure. It worked well for me. I even caught a 17" walleye on it one day. Good luck man!
