Any plywood aquarium failures?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine was 96x48x29 inches. It lasted 5 years without a single leak. I sold my house and dismantled the tank. Was thinking about getting it going again.

It was 2x4/2x6 wood framed, 3/4 plywood, fiberglass/epoxy, and silicone to fill in the segments.

If you put in time and quality it should last decades.

I have a 500 gal plywood build that i am currently repairing. My tank had a leak do to a poorly placed 400 watt submersable heater. My 500 gal has a liquid rubber coating (Ames brand ) and the heater which came into contact with the wall of tank and was left that way most of the first winter. It burned off the rubber coating leaving obvious black burn. I silicone patched it and lasted 4 years til it leaked agin this summer.

There is wood rot under the silicone patch so i sanded and drilled out the soft rotton wood. I patched it up this time with fiberglass resign and few other suspect spots got some resign as well. I am happy with my plywood build it should last many years after this patch job.

I plan on test filling the 500 first of the year and i am saving some cash for summer stocking i will post some pics up when ready. I also have a 1000 watt stainless steel heater that will be carefully placed and supported instead of several smaller heaters just rolling around the tank that was my rookie mistake on my first monster plywood tank.

That's something I likely would have never considered. Great advice!
