I'm getting ready to move to Hawaii (I'll be buying a house as well) and was wondering if anyone kept ponds or outdoor tanks over there? From what I read, the temperature is fairly stable.

I'm obviously still in the research stage, so feel free to chime in with thoughts and concerns.

My indoor tanks will be 2 90gal saltwater FOWLRs.

I've kept outdoor tanks there with no problems. What island will you be moving to and what do you plan to keep? My buddy has a koi farm on Oahu called Kodama Koi Farm. Pond equipment can also be bought at Waimanalo Feed on the Windward side.

I'll be on Oahu as well.

What size did you run? How difficult were native pests? How was keeping the tank at temp?

I'm not sure what I want to keep, koi aren't exactly my favorite fish, but I'm open to a LOT of suggestions.

I'll check those places out for my supplies.

What has you in SD? I moved from La Jolla out here and now I'm going to Hawaii.

You can do pretty much any cichlids you want in a pond on Oahu. I did a 180gal, 40gal breeder and a 700gal pond at the house I use to lived in pearl city. Never heard of heaters. I know plenty people that do ponds in Hawaii.

Lived there for 24 years....what native pest? Maybe a cat but they don't pose any threat. Never heard of a mongoose taking fish. I never had a heater on any of my tanks. If you're into freshwater fishing, check out Lake Wilson. They have bass, pbass, red devils, catfish, blue gill, oscar, tilapia and snakehead.

That's awesome. I'd love to keep native fish, and I thoroughly enjoy freshwater fishing.

We have tons of pests here that kill fish, birds, foxes, cats, etc. I didn't know if Hawaii had similar issues.

The pond in mind is 10'x6'x3', hopefully an adequate size.

If you're going with cichlids in a pond, I'd go with something brightly colored. Festae or Midas. Something on the orange spectrum. I think they're great when viewed from above. The blue spectrum cichlids fade away into the black liner. My .02

Honestly Hawaii would be the best place for a pond. No need for heaters, let alone water conditioners lol

Good point Anchovie.

I wish I could do a dark sand colored liner to see my fish better. Catfish are ideal, I'm a huge fan of them and they are pretty resilient. Pretty much anything native will do.
